Keeping Your Child Safe During Online Tutoring: What Parents Need to Know
9 July 2026 · 6 min read · By ThinkViva
Online tutoring has become one of the most effective ways for children to receive personalised academic support, particularly for Nigerian diaspora families who want to keep their children connected to the curriculum from anywhere in the world. The convenience is real. But so is the question every responsible parent asks before they hand their child a screen and a headset: Is this safe?
At ThinkViva, safeguarding is not a policy document buried in a folder. It is part of how we recruit tutors, structure sessions, and communicate with families. This guide explains what safe online tutoring looks like in practice, what we do to protect every child in our care, and what parents can do at home to reinforce those efforts.
How We Vet Every Tutor
The most important safeguarding decision happens before a child ever joins a session: who is on the other side of the screen?
Every ThinkViva tutor goes through a thorough selection process. We assess qualifications, teaching experience, and subject knowledge. We also evaluate each applicant's understanding of appropriate professional conduct with children. Tutors who join the platform are expected to uphold clear standards around how they communicate with students, how they handle personal information, and how they respond if a child discloses something that concerns them.
We do not place a tutor with a family until we are satisfied on all of these points. If a concern arises after a tutor has started working with us, we take it seriously and act quickly.
Secure Platforms Only
All ThinkViva sessions take place on Zoom or Google Meet, not through personal messaging apps, social media, or informal video tools. These platforms are chosen deliberately. They allow sessions to take place in a defined, professional space, with no need for tutors and students to share personal contact details.
Parents are always welcome to sit in on sessions, and we encourage families to keep the learning space visible rather than tucked away. A door slightly open, a parent nearby, an awareness of what is happening on screen: these small habits make a meaningful difference.
Professional Boundaries in Every Session
Clear professional boundaries are non-negotiable. Tutors communicate with students only through approved channels, on scheduled session times, and about educational matters. They do not contact students outside of sessions, ask for personal information beyond what is needed for teaching, or engage with children on personal social media accounts.
Parents receive session summaries and can contact our support team at any time. If something in a session feels wrong, that feeling is worth acting on. We make it easy for families to raise concerns without it being a big deal, because early communication prevents problems from growing.
Privacy and Your Child's Information
We collect only the information we need: your child's name, grade, and subjects. We do not share it with third parties, and we do not ask tutors to hold student information outside of what is necessary to prepare and deliver lessons. For full details on how we handle data, see our Privacy Policy.
Parents can also play an active role in digital safety by teaching children a few simple habits:
- Never share passwords, home addresses, or personal details during sessions
- Tell a parent immediately if a tutor asks for information that feels unusual
- Understand that sessions are for learning, not personal chat
What to Do If Something Concerns You
If your child mentions something from a session that makes you uncomfortable, or if you observe behaviour that does not feel right, contact us directly at info@thinkviva.org or via WhatsApp. We take every concern seriously, respond promptly, and do not dismiss parental instinct. You know your child. If something feels off, tell us.
Children may not always have the words to describe what bothers them. Signs that something may not be right include reluctance to attend sessions they previously enjoyed, unusual quietness after a session, or a child mentioning that a tutor said something surprising. These observations are worth sharing with us, even if you are not sure whether they are significant.
The Bigger Picture: A Learning Community Built on Trust
Academic results matter. But they are only worth pursuing in an environment where children feel safe, respected, and valued. A child who is uncomfortable cannot focus. A child who trusts their tutor and their environment learns more effectively, engages more deeply, and develops the kind of confidence that carries beyond any single subject.
ThinkViva exists to help Nigerian families provide their children with consistent, high-quality education from Kindergarten to Grade 9, wherever they are in the world. Safeguarding is what makes that possible. Without trust, there is no learning worth the name.
If you have questions about our safeguarding approach before enrolling, we welcome them. Reach us at info@thinkviva.org or via WhatsApp on +234 707 734 0116. We are happy to talk through how we work and what you can expect as a ThinkViva family.
